New York Sues Vape Distributors Over Youth Vaping Crisis

New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against several e-cigarette manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, alleging they contributed to a youth vaping epidemic by marketing products with appealing flavors and cartoonish packaging.

The lawsuit seeks hundreds of millions in civil fines and damages from 16 defendants, including Demand Vape and Puff Bar. James asserts that these companies knowingly targeted minors, violating a 2020 state law prohibiting the sale of flavored vapor products to individuals under 21.

The complaint highlights flavors like "Baja Slushie" and "Strawberry Cereal Donut Milk" as examples of products designed to attract young consumers. This legal action underscores the state's commitment to combating the public health crisis associated with underage vaping and holding companies accountable for practices reminiscent of "Big Tobacco's playbook." The defendants have yet to respond to the allegations

The U.S. Navy has relieved Captain Dave Snowden of his command of the USS Harry S. Truman after the aircraft carrier collided with a merchant vessel near Port Said, Egypt, on February 12, 2025. The decision was based on a loss of confidence in his ability to command.

Captain Christopher Hill has assumed command of the nuclear-powered carrier. The incident, which did not result in injuries or significant damage, is under investigation. This event underscores the Navy's commitment to maintaining high standards of leadership and operational readiness.

The collision has prompted a review of navigational protocols to prevent future occurrences. The Navy continues to emphasize accountability and the importance of adhering to established maritime procedures to ensure the safety of its vessels and crew.

Correctional Officers Charged in Death of Inmate Robert Brooks

Nine correctional officers have been charged in connection with the death of Robert L. Brooks, an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility in New York. The charges include murder, manslaughter, and tampering with evidence. Brooks, 43, died in December after allegedly being brutally beaten by officers while handcuffed.

Body camera footage revealed the excessive use of force, leading to widespread outrage and calls for justice. The indictment follows an investigation led by Onondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick. The case has sparked criticism of the correctional system and highlighted issues with the treatment of inmates.

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced immediate changes at the facility and emphasized the need for systemic reforms. Brooks' family has filed a federal lawsuit alleging systemic prison violence. The incident has prompted discussions on the use of body-worn cameras and the accountability of correctional staff.

  • Weaker Bank Regulations: Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision, Michael Barr, announced his resignation from the regulatory post effective end of February. In his final address, Barr cautioned against diluting existing bank regulations, emphasizing that robust oversight is essential to shield financial institutions from unforeseen shocks. He also urged the completion of international capital standards to maintain global financial stability.

  • Walmart Raises Concerns: Walmart reported strong sales and profits for 2024, attracting inflation-conscious consumers. However, the retailer anticipates a challenging 2025, projecting earnings per share below analyst expectations and modest sales growth. Factors contributing to this outlook include potential consumer spending pullbacks and the impact of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on imports. This cautious forecast led to a 6% drop in Walmart's stock price.
